Cuhulain for Person of the Year

Dear Friends:

The daughter of a Wiccan who corresponds with me sent this in to me yesterday. She's nominated me for an award, apparently. Thanks Allyson!

Kerr Cuhulain for Person of the Year By Allyson Antoniades-Wood

Charles Ennis is better known to the Pagan community as Kerr Cuhulain. Mr. Cuhulain is a retired Vancouver police officer. I think he is very brave and an honest man. He collected money for Katrina survivors. He is an author of five pagan books, and regularly contributes articles to WitchVox, a huge networking website to connect pagans all over the world. So far, he’s done a lot.
He supported the Tempest Smith case and the Headstone campaign two very important issues in the Pagan community. Tempest was a 12-year-old girl from Michigan, who committed suicide because she was bullied by her classmates. Sgt. Patrick Stewart died in the line of duty in Afghanistan, and was denied his military emblem of faith, a pentagram, on his headstone as it was refused recognition by veteran affairs. This shows how much Cuhulain cares about the pagan community.

As a police officer, Kerr had many assignments, such as: “Emergency Response Team, hostage negotiator, child abuse investigator, gang crime unit, and the mental health Emergency Services Unit.” Kerr was an officer for twenty-nine years. He helped in emergency calls to save the day. Before retiring he earned a Governor General’s Exemplary Service Medal.

Kerr Cuhulain helped create the Officers of Avalon, an organization representing Neo-Pagan professionals in the emergency services (police, firefighters, emergency medical tech, etc.) Avalon Cares was a project for Hurricane Katrina relief to help Katrina survivors. The Officers of Avalon were able to collect 35,000 dollars in 2 weeks for the Katrina survivors. They collected money, food, and clothes for the survivors. Avalon also paid for replacement uniforms for the New Orleans police.

As an author of many Pagan books, Kerr wrote books like: Law Enforcement Guide to Wicca, Witch-Hunts, Wiccan Warrior, Full Contact Magick and Magickal Self Defense. These books explain how to empower ones self. His work is unique and unlike any other pagan authors’. Most pagan authors write books on how to become a pagan.

Kerr Cuhulain is a great influence on the pagan community. He supports the community by getting involved. As a young pagan, this is important to me because I would like someone like him to be on my side. Sometimes, I worry if any of my friends would pick on me if they knew my religion. Learning about this inspires me, makes me want to get involved and help people in my community.

Mr. Cuhulain is cool guy, and a great writer. He emailed my Mom and even sent me pictures to help with this assignment, which I really appreciate! I would love to meet him in person. That’s why he has my vote for person of the year based on his service, concern and effort.

Yule News

Dear Friends:

I hope that you've all had a happy Yule. I experienced an exceptional Yule ritual at the Scathach gathering last Saturday. I've included a couple of shots of the altar. I was presented with a stained glass window bearing the Scathach logo: Apparently the members secretly donated to this project. Quite overwhelming.

A snowstorm started a few hours after the ritual and it took some of us a while to get home. I ended up stuck on a hill because a semi trailer unit jack knifed at the bottom, completely blocking the road. I eventually had to back track and take another route.

I've just finished my latest manuscript draft for the book of Scathach rituals and will send off a proposal this afternoon to the publisher. This has led me to make updates to the rituals and lessons on the Scathach training blog.

New Puget Sound Preceptory of Scáthach

The new Puget Sound preceptory of our Order of Scáthach is having their first meeting tonight in Seattle. Skatha, one of our Knights, is going to be running this new group. Unfortunately I have to work tonight or I’d be there to see it happen. If you’re interested, please contact me and I’ll connect you with this new preceptory.

Nanaimo Training and Armoring

A Commandery of 7 Knights and 2 Squires sailed to Nanaimo on December 13 to do training and conduct rituals. Twelve people turned up to participate (see photo). The Commandery members all had a good time and it appears to have been well received. We'll be heading down to Seattle in April or May to do a similar training session.

Healing Energy for Selena Fox

Please send well wishes and healing support to Selena Fox of Circle Sanctuary.

On Wednesday, December 3, 2008, Selena will have ovarian surgery at a hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. The surgery will remove a large cyst which was recently discovered on her left ovary. Her left ovary and fallopian tube will also be removed. The cyst and ovary will undergo laboratory analysis and test results are expected back later this month.

Ten years ago, Selena had surgery which removed her right ovary and a large growth, which turned out to be a type of ovarian cancer. Periodic blood tests have indicated that Selena has been free of ovarian cancer since that time. Please send blessings that this continues to be the case.

Your meditations, prayers, and rituals are greatly appreciated as she prepares for the surgery, has it, and recovers. Some photos of Selena to use as a focus are at her website: www.selenafox.com

Well wishes can be sent to her at this special email address: selenafox@circlesanctuary.org

Although circumstances are such that she can not reply individually to emails she receives, know that your email will be passed on to her and she gives thanks for your support.

Precept of the Month

The Precept of the Month is “Do not engage in useless activity.” A Wiccan becomes a Warrior by seeking results. Seek out new ideas. Try new things out. There is nothing wrong with experimentation. That is how you will find out what works for you. If you find that a particular technique or “spell” doesn’t work, you should set it aside. Perhaps it won’t work for you at your present stage of development. Maybe it isn’t a technique that will work for you at all. If this is the case, toss it out.
That is why you use a Book of Shadows as a working journal. This is where you will record results. You should record the failures too. You should periodically review old entries: Sometimes something that you’ve recently learned will give you the key to something that didn’t work for you before.

The Principle of Chivalry this month is loyalty, which is linked to respect. There are many ways of giving respect:
· A Wiccan Warrior’s word is his bond. A Wiccan Warrior strives to be known for his commitment. Keep your word and you will win the loyalty of others. Respect is something that you earn.
· Do not waste other people’s valuable time by being late. I wince every time I hear tardy people excusing themselves by saying that they are on “Pagan Standard Time.” This is an ignorant expression which clearly demonstrates how little the person using it respects you.

Witchvox Article

Byron Ballard just posted the article "I Need Help! Please Send Energy! Daily Spiritual Practice and the Modern Pagan" on Witchvox. How many people do you know that do exactly what the people that he describes in his article do? That's exactly why the Order of Scathach puts so much emphasis on personal empowerment and taking charge of your life.

Scathach Blog Problem

Dear Friends:

The Scathach members blog crashed yesterday. It had mushroomed from just a handful of original members to a large group in just under a year and the original idea of letting members have administrative status for the original small group was still in place so that "authors" on the blog could put in links. Unfortunately it appears that someone who put in a new post then decided to delete it went to the wrong place and deleted the entire blog, all 146 posts. It would have been nice for this person to ask how to do it if they didn't know instead of guessing. Janus is now working with Google techs to either bring it back or start from scratch. We're hopeful that it will be the former, but we are prepared for the latter. Either way, the Scathach blog will be back in a few days. Meanwhile I'm still here on this one, where I regularly put public news about Scathach.

Hopefully we'll also have a web site for Scathach up and running in the New Year also.

Latest Manuscript and Celebrity News

I'm just putting finishing touches on my latest manuscript. This one is about Warrior ritual and includes recipes. It is the ritual side of Scathahc. I just sent a book proposal off.

Last week Australian actress Annie Semler dropped by the Scathach Motherhouse in Surrey for a visit. She had read Magickal Self Defense and looked me up. I gave her a lesson assisted by Janus from Scathach and sent her off with a CD of our lessons. Annie's husband Dean, a celebrated cinematographer, is in Vancouver now filming a new movie.

Class is Now in Session

The latest classes for Scáthach are now in session. In the core group of Scáthach which meets at the Motherhouse in Surrey, British Columbia, we now have 33 members who come in from Surrey, Burnaby, Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Delta, and New Westminster locally and from as far away as Powell River on the Sunshine Coast and from Seattle and Bellingham, WA. There are another 8 students in BC who are too far away to attend and study on line (in Victoria, Nanaimo, Balfour and Castlegar). We have on line students in ts who haven’t yet told me where they are situated (so if you haven’t told me yet, now is a good time). We have one student in Melbourne, Australia, one in New Zealand, one in South Africa and one in Surrey in the UK. We have Canadian students in New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec. We have US students in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
And of course, as I mentioned in previous posts, there is a new preceptory starting up in the Seattle, Washington area, and I don’t know exactly how many will be in that group yet: I will find out next weekend.

Scáthach

People have been asking me about our coven, Scáthach, so here's what we're all about:

Scáthach is a Wiccan coven and study group founded in November 2007 by Wiccan author Kerr Cuhulain, embracing Warrior philosophies as outlined in his books Wiccan Warrior, Full Contact Magick and Magickal Self Defense. Scáthach focuses on expression and effective magick and embracing the concept of chivalry.

Members of Scáthach must honor and uphold the Wiccan Rede in all its aspects.

Members of Scáthach must follow the 13 warrior precepts:

1. Know thyself.
2. Nurture the ability to perceive the truth in all matters.
3. You create your own reality.
4. Develop a sense of Right Action.
5. Do not be negligent, even in trifling matters.
6. Your body is your temple: Care for it!
7. Minimal appearance, maximum content.
8. Perceive that which cannot be seen with the eye.
9. Power with.
10. Who dares wins.
11. The Gods cannot help those who will not help themselves.
12. Be creative!
13. Do not engage in useless activity.

Scáthach Oath of Knighthood (Code of Chivalry):

By the power of earth, water, air, fire, and spirit, before the Gods, the Sidhe and the Ancestors, I do declare before this assemblage my fealty and allegiance to Scáthach, to its thirteen precepts, and to the rule of law.
So shall I ever defend the values of Sincerity, Courtesy, Compassion, Perseverance, Industriousness, Justice, Loyalty, Courage, Self-Discipline, Humility, Largesse, Dignity, Truth, and Honor, which in this modern world are so often neglected. I take these values into my heart and soul that they may manifest themselves in my words and deeds.[1]
Standing proud and free, radiating my inner truth, exultant in my power, I raise up my voice and proclaim myself to be a knight of Scáthach and to dedicate myself to the mastery and defense of these values. In this I am resolved. This I declare before the Gods, the Sidhe and the Ancestors.
Biodh Se!

Rights of Scáthach Knighthood:
1. We have the right to choose the course of our lives and manner of our deaths.
2. We have the right to openly state our opinions.
3. We have the right to challenge delusion and falsehood.
4. We have the right to walk these lands cowed by none.
5. We have the right to fulfill our needs, save those that would harm others.
6. We have the right to share love with another.
7. We have the right to spurn all convention imposed upon us.
8. We have the right to instruct our children in our chosen values.
9. We have the right to oppose any who attack these rights.
Scáthach is a study group for people interested in Wiccan magick, energy work and rituals related to the Warrior path. I intend for us to develop new rituals, magick and philosophies. I expect everyone to participate and contribute. The first phase of training (novice) has to do with energy, psychic skills and magick. At the end of this first phase the novice becomes a squire at an Armoring ceremony. The second level of training has to do with ritual and magickal weapons. At the end of this second phase the squire becomes a knight at an Arming ceremony. The third phase of training is about teaching and leadership. At the end of the third phase the knight becomes a master.

There will be no liquor in Scáthach Circles or rituals. I respect Pagan traditions that use wine, mead, or whiskey in Circle or ritual as the “water of life.” This “prohibition” isn’t intended as a criticism of their practices. My wife and I were both formerly involved in relationships with alcoholic partners and their families. In my view liquor is too easily abused. I’ve been to too many Circles or gatherings where people came drunk or got drunk. This will not happen here. Scáthach may have social events outside of Circle where such beverages are available, but they will not be used in ritual.

Scáthach is a drug free coven. No drugs will be tolerated, period. Members of Scáthach will obey the laws and uphold them. My position on this subject is well documented in Wiccan Warrior, Full Contact Magick, and Magickal Self Defense. I will support anyone committed to recovery efforts.

I am not opposed to the use of incense but will seldom use it in Circle, as my wife and I have allergies. I tend to use incense in outdoor Circles and rituals, if at all.

This is a family coven and children are entirely welcome in Circle and out. The rules are the same for kids as for adults: People in Circle are expected to behave with courtesy towards others.

Scáthach does not do skyclad ritual: I've got two skyclad initiations and I respect Wiccan trads that practice skyclad ritual, but I don't want that to be part of Scáthach. Scáthach conducts most rituals at the Motherhouse or member’s homes in casual wear. I'm perfectly OK with ritual robes for Sabbats and Esbats, but if a coven member shows up in street clothes due to limited funds or a tight work schedule that's perfectly alright. I've done plenty of rituals after work on my own in a field with the clothes that I went to work in. I don't want to get too hung up on ritual paraphernalia. For public events our uniform is a black Gi (karate jacket) with the Scáthach logo (see above) on the back in white.

Kidney Donor Needed

I just got this message from fellow author Stefani Barner who needs help:

"Since we've officially hit the point where we can start looking for (& slowly testing) potential kidney donors for Rory, I thought that the easiest way to get the information about donation out to everyone would be through a website.
Of course, it's only mostly helpful, since I still have to get .pdf versions of the actual donor paperwork, LOL, but in the meantime, it's an easy way for people to get the information about how to help him out with either living donation
in some other way. By the end of this week, I hope to have the pre-donor screening forms available to print off as well. There are two purposes here: 1) to get information about living kidney donation to those who might be willing to donate and 2) to get information about what ELSE we need to our friends & family who have been asking. This is NOT a blog, solicitation website (other than the aforementioned living kidney donors & family inquiries), or place to get updates on how Rory is doing. It's a very targeted appeal to potential organ donors & a place to get information about Rory's Chronic Kidney Disease & treatment. So...if you would be so kind, please pass along this website to your various address books, groups & elists, so that we can spread the message of living kidney donation (for Rory and for everyone) far and wide. :-) The website is:

www.kidneykid.com

Easy to remember, fairly simple once you're there, but potentially life-saving for our little boy. Please bookmark it, check it out and pass it along.

Thanks everyone!

Stef"

The memorial service for Denessa Smith of the Tempest Smith Foundation will be held in Detroit, MI, on August 8. As I will be unable to attend, a proxy will be reading out the following memorial address to the mourners on my behalf. Many thanks to Michelle Belanger of House Khepheru for assisting me in doing this.

Memorial Address from Kerr Cuhulain:

I chose Denessa to be the Warrior Priestess for the Armoring Ritual at Convocation in Troy, Michigan in 2006 for a very good reason. She exemplified the Warrior. It took a lot of courage to recover from the grievous loss of her daughter Tempest and come back to found an organization dedicated to making sure that no one else was bullied the way her daughter was. Denessa transmuted anger into commitment and tolerance. Denessa went out into the community to teach and transform. She practiced the first rule of magick: You create your own reality. The reality that she sought to create was a better world for everyone. She lived according to one of the principles my coven, Scáthach: Who dares, wins. She dared to make our neighborhoods safer. Denessa was a defender of our community, and a true Warrior. I am glad to have shared that moment with her in 2006. My fellow Warriors will honor and remember her. She will be missed.

In closing, let me offer a poem honoring fallen Warriors written by John Mayne in July 1805, which I have altered slightly to fit this occasion:

Ah me! how sorrowful and slow,

With arms reversed, the Warriors come—

Dirge-sounding trumpets, full of woe,

And, sad to hear, the Muffled Drum!

Advancing to the House of Prayer,

Still sadder flows the dolesome strain;

Even Industry forgets her care,

And joins the melancholy train!

O! after all the toils of war,

How blest the brave woman lays her down!

Her bier is a triumphal car—

Her grave is—glory and renown!

What tho' nor friends nor kindred dear,

To grace her obsequies, attend?

Her comrades are her fellows here,

And every hero is her friend!

See Love and Truth, all woe begone;

And beauty, drooping in the crowd—

Their thoughts intent on her alone

Who sleeps for ever in her shroud!

Again, the trumpet slowly sounds

The Warrior's last Funeral Hymn:—

Again the muffled drum rebounds,

And every eye with grief is dim!

The generous steed, which late she rode,

Seems, too, its mistress to deplore;

And follows to her last abode

The warrior—who returns no more!

For her, far hence, a mother sighs,

And fancies comforts yet to come!

She'll never bless her longing eyes—

She'll only hear the Muffled Drum!

Worldwide Intention Experiment

Dear Friends:

I'm inviting you all to participate in a global experiment that will happen September 14, 2008. My coven has been working at sending our intentions to one another or to people that needed healing with measurable results. This experiment, the largest of its kind ever attempted, has been set up by author Lynne McTaggart and will use the same abilities. Basically at a certain time (5 PM) on the 14th of September participants will need to go on line and focus on their computer screen for a short while so that the entire group, spread across the globe, will be focussing their intent on the same "target" at the same time to see if we can lower the level of crime and/or violence. Similar smaller experiments have already been conducted with measurable success. You can check some of this out at: http://www.bleepingherald.com/jul2008/intention-experiment

I've already applied to register my coven and am waiting confirmation by e-mail. You can check out the Intention Experiment site at:http://www.theintentionexperiment.com/

I encourage other Wiccans to participate in this worthy experiment. I think that this would be a good way for us to practice and develop our abilities in a way that will make the world a better place. Any of you that would like to join me in doing this should drop me a line to let me know. I'll keep you posted with details.

Canadian National Pagan Conference

I’ve been invited to be the keynote speaker at the Canadian National Pagan Conference in Vancouver, BC, May 15 – 19, 2009. I’m told that it will attract 120 – 150 participants and will be held at the University of British Columbia. CNPC has rotated annually around Canada since it began in Edmonton in 2004. It brings together Canadian Pagan scholars and scholars of Paganism, Elders, activists and leaders in the various Pagan faiths (Wicca, Asatru, Druidry and others) for discussion and networking. Now all I have to do is figure out what issue I’m going to talk about. Anybody out there have any suggestions?

Scáthach Coven

Some people were asking me about our coven Scáthach on line, so I decided to post on the blog here to tell people about it:

Scáthach is a Wiccan coven and study group founded by me, embracing Warrior philosophies as outlined in mybooks Wiccan Warrior, Full Contact Magick and Magickal Self Defense. It is located in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, which places it very close to the border with Washington State. We have local members from BC and Washington and on line members around the world. Scáthach focuses on expression and effective magick. Local and on line classes started in November of 2007. There is NO charge for these classes.

Our first degree focuses on magick and energy and takes about 6 months. The second degree is all about ritual. The third is about mastery, leadership and teaching.

Scáthach holds Sabbat celebrations that are open to all Scáthach members and family, both local and out of town. We supply scripts of the rituals to out of town members so that they can organize their own gatherings if they wish.

Scáthach has a members only blog to allow members to network.

If you are interested in joining Scáthach, write to me at cuhulain@telus.net

Litha Greetings

Greetings:

In about a week our Scáthach coven will be celebrating Litha with a BBQ and Litha ritual at my place in Surrey, BC. I’m looking forward to it. The garden has never looked better, though the temperatures up to now have been below average.

At ECOMM the other day I got a call on 911 from a citizen complaining about the noise of hammering next door. Specifically she was complaining about the city workers who were with the police at the scene of a break in where the owner was out of town. Because the owner was away we were forced to board the residence up to secure it until the owner returned. This lady complained that the city workers were making too much noise boarding it up (a job that took all of about 10 minutes). She knew that it was the police (she could see them clearly). She was completely indifferent to her neighbor’s plight. Unfortunately not a lot of compassion or patience there.

The same night I got a call on 911 from a frantic lady:

Me: “Police emergency.”

Caller: (hysterical) “I’ve just been bit by my puppy!”

Me: “Why are you calling police?”

Caller: “Will I get rabies?”

I transferred her to ambulance.

Acorn Guild Press is looking over the updated version of my Law Enforcement Guide to Wicca. The original Law Enforcement Guide to Wicca went out of print, so I've just signed a contract with Acorn to do a new edition. The new book, the Law Enforcement Guide to Pagan Religion, will include Druidism and Asatru as well as Wicca. I’ll keep you posted on developments.

I'm also well advanced on a book of rituals and recipes that Scáthach uses throughout the year.

I posted an article on warding a couple of weeks ago on Witchvox. I’ve got more articles on magick and Wicca coming up. As soon as the warding article was posted I received a number of e mails from people who said that they were happy to see me back on Witchvox again. I’d like to thank them all for their support. I also started receiving various bits of information on anti pagan activities. While I am interested in keeping abreast of such activities, I’d like to point out that after 25 years of fighting battles with fundy extremists, I’m done. As you know I’ve retired from police work and I must tell you that I’ve retired from anti defamation work too. I’ve spent enough years in the trenches: Someone younger can take up the sword and do battle with the idiots. I’m turning my focus to my writing and to teaching, which is why you’ve heard me talking of Scáthach and why you see me writing articles about Wicca on Witchvox.

I hope that you have a wonderful Litha.

Bright Blessings
Kerr Cuhulain
